1) Your post must include a solid response that includes a well-formed opinion that references the text and/or your own experiences. Use the paragraph number to refer to specific passages/quotes.
2) Your "comment" to another student shouldn't repeat someone else's comment, but rather extend the thinking beyond what was already posted. Don't simply write, "I agree with so and so."
Here you go, finally: A New Year’s resolution is a decision to do or not do something in order to accomplish a personal goal or break a habit. Why do we continue to make resolutions every year even though so few of us follow through?

Even though so few of us follow through on our New Year resolutions, we still continue to make one every year because we want to give it our best shot. Most of us do not follow through only because we get overwhelmed whether it’s a busy schedule, too many resolutions, or over commitment. I find it better to inform my friends and family of my resolutions so they remind me to keep the resolutions if I’m about to break them and support me throughout the year. Even if you think you will break your resolution, I suggest to still give it a shot and be confident in yourself and see where the year will take you and your resolution.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hannah. Be confined to. Give it a shot. Take a chance. Where will the new year take you? After all whats life without a little risk?
DeleteI agree with you Hannah, we won't know if we can actually follow through with our resolutions if we don't give it our best shot. Maybe last year we didn't but we won't if 2018 will be our year if we don't try, and for confidence if we go through life believing in our self we will get there eventually.
DeleteNo one knows what the new year will bring and people make resolutions to “better” themselves. It feels good in the moment but when people go to do it it’s not what they expected. Change is hard. People have to be willing to step outside their comfort zone and actually go through with their goals. Actions speak louder than words
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Ava on the fact that people have this false expectation of how easy it is to start something new or do something better. When people set New Years resolutions they are trying to tell themselves that they are going to fully commit to getting better and starting the New Year off right. But like Ava said, change is hard. And that's the part that people don't usually take into mind when they set these usually unrealistic goals for themselves to complete in a totally unrealistic amount of time. People think that completing these goals is suppose to be fun. It can be fun but it is not always fun. The fun part comes with or after all the pain and suffering of reaching a point where you are contempt with how you executed your goal.
DeleteI agree with Ava because a lot of people do not expect the change that will take place once they try to go with their resolutions. They do not take the time to think about what will happen as a result of their actions. Most of the people who make resolutions are not even willing to speak up about them or put in the effort to try and make them happen. Those people are too scared and uncomfortable with the changes it might bring.
DeletePeople still create New Years resolutions because it gives them hope to follow through on something that they have always wanted to do, no matter about addiction or something that involves themselves emotionally. These resolutions may not be followed through upon because they might be physically impossible or the person emotionally does not believe that they are capable of it. Sometimes, these resolutions are a last resort to give themselves hope to stop a dangerous habit before its too late. Never the less, resolutions are always going to be made because they give confidence and hope for others in need of something, no matter what.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michael. I believe that when a lot of people are in a tough spot with addictions or bad habits, a resolution brings out a little light in their lives that there is a chance to change the things you do and even who you are. This makes them feel like it's not a dead end but a new hope.
DeleteI believe that the reason that people make New Year's resolutions even though they don't follow through on them is because it's a tradition. Also people make resolutions because they have high expectations for the new year and believe they will follow through with their resolutions but after a few weeks loose motivation entirely. People also see the New Year as a fresh start and the optimal time to change for the better but they fall into old habits. It's also far easier to say that you are going to do something than to actually do it. Also there is usually no consequence to not completing your goal and when people set unrealistic goals they can't keep up with them so they just quit. To complete your goal it would be best to make it simple and also somewhat easy so that you can improve your own well being without becoming overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteI believe that people continue to set goals for themselves specifically around New Years because it gives them initiative and an idea of abetter start to a 'fresh slate'. According to Paul B. Brown's article "Starting Is Always Scary. Swallow Hard And Start Anyway. It's The Only Way You'll Succeed", starting itself is the hardest part about starting something new. When someone makes a New Years resolution, they are taking the initiative to plan a starting date. By doing this people are setting a deadline for them which encourages them to start. However, most people see the deadline come and go and don't do anything to work towards their goal. This is likely due to the fact that most people lack commitment or are just lazy in general.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because people see the little amount of progress they have made, and will just give up because they think they will never reach their goal before the deadline. If would be helpfull to have many little deadlines to work for then one huge one, that is often unrealistic to begin with.
DeleteMany of us make resolutions because it is a tridition. They are not always really planing of accomplishing anything. Those of us who are serious start of strong, excited for this change in their life, but soon give up, seeing the amount of effort this would take. Making sure that you have a certian time in the day to study, work out, do homework, read, whatever it is, will help you with your goal. When you just have to make time for your activity, you will continuously put it off until you run out of time. I know this is true, because I always run out of time if I don't have a specific time set aside for it.
ReplyDeleteMany new years resolutions revolve around bad habits we want to break or things we want to change about ourselves, and even though our new years resolutions may be relevant in our life its hard to make time and actually stick with it. Many people loose interest and passion in their resolutions and don't stick with them. A lot of lifestyles don't revolve around one change so its easy to loose sight of a goal and move on. I think that we make new years resolutions because we all hear the term "new year, new me" and become wrapped up in the idea of changing rather than the long term effort and time it may take.

DeleteI agree with Megan because a lot of people will want to better themselves but they don't make the time and get side tracked with something else going on in their life. Everyone gets caught up in the idea of doing something new in their life and when it really comes down to it they don't know how to start or make time for it.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI agree with you, Megan because we all will always want to make a change wether it be our look or lifestyle. Many people believe the New Year is the time to make that change. If we do not try, we may never change to make ourselves the happiest we can be.
DeleteI agree with you Megan, because many people believe that the new year is the perfect chance to start fresh and better themselves. I don't think people realize that it actually takes time and effort to achieve their goal, so they either procrastinate or give up.
DeleteThe reason many people make new years resolutions is because they see an opportunity to start fresh and become a better person. Most people do not follow through with these resolutions because they do not know how hard it is to stick with it, and when an unexpected change comes up in life, they forget about the resolutions. Also, people get bored and stop trying to put effort into trying to accomplish their goals or resolutions. Another reason could be because the majority of people want to go along with the saying "new year, new me" and try to change themselves completely and as fast as they can rather than trying to put more effort into it and take it slow.
ReplyDeleteI agree people look at the new year as a chance for a new year new me kind of thing but don't realize that the process can long and difficult.
DeleteI agree with you sticking to your new years resolutions can be more difficult than you can expect.

ReplyDeleteNew year's Resolutions are on every one's mind as the new year rings in. But not everyone makes one and not everyone keeps them. Many people make resolutions to find a way to better themselves as a person and to start off fresh. However, the craziness of life can sometimes be bigger than a new years resolution for someone, or they feel defeated and give up. For example, a tip on our classwork explains how many procrastinate and wait days, weeks, even months to start a resolution, but then feel it is too late to begin, so they just never end up pursuing their resolution(s) to begin with.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, because people want to start anew and try to become a better version of themselves. If life gets in the way, most people are too lazy to power through and continue on, they just stop trying. If people can't see results right away, they just give up. Life ends up getting too complicated or hard for people and they stop trying to finish their goal.
DeleteI agree with you. Life gets crazy and people forget about their resolutions and don't have time to follow through. Also, once people finally find the time to try they get lazy and don't want to put in the effort
DeleteI agree with you, because people seem to give up after the first week of January. As messy as our world is, the more people focus more on their work instead of their goals. I agree that people feel like giving up just because they did not start the day everyone else did.

ReplyDeleteNew Year Resolutions are somewhat a tradition or most people. They are extremely hard to stick by. People do them, to try a challenge themselves to become a better version then they are. Most people can never stick to them, because they don't realize how hard they can be. Some try it for fun to reach their goal and others try it to better themselves. Starting a resolution is like cleaning your room. at first it seems easy and quick, but once you head into it more, you see that it is actually very hard and exhausting. Then you just stop. it becomes too hard to follow through.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Bethany, that most people like to challenge themselves with a hard resolution. I feel that people who make New Year Resolutions have positive thoughts at the start of the year because they are thinking they will be like after they complete their goal.,
DeleteI agree, people don't always realize what it fully takes to follow through with the resolution, which is why I think it is important to think and consider all the factors of a decision before you decide something, like starting a resolution.
DeleteI agree because many people set resolutions but find they do not like them while trying to complete them and stop. Some people may even think that their resolution was too hard to complete.
DeleteI agree with you. People don't follow through their resolutions because they become hard to stand by. People often don't take resolutions seriously
DeleteWe make New Years resolutions because it gives us something to work towards. Resolutions can be easy or hard. Weather it's changing something about yourself or keeping something. Resolutions can be hard to stick with because many people "bite off more than they can chew", but that doesn't mean people can't try to get to that goal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because by having a resolution, we have a goal to work towards to, but if we just make a mental plan, we won't work as hard to fulfill it. It definitely can be hard, but we really just need the will to do it to get where we want to be.
DeleteEven though most people don't stick to their resolutions everyone needs something to look forward to. Almost all resolutions are made to better ones self i.e. lose weight, eat healthier, stop smoking etc. Even though most people don't stick to what they intended to everyone wants to be better and setting goals is how people decide to do that but they never pull through because of life or something getting in the way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because people always make the resolutions as something to look forward to as a sense of hope. Stuff does get in the way of people sticking to the resolution, but I believe that it is very good for these resolutions to be made because it helps people feel good about themselves and increase their self esteem.
DeletePeople continue to make resolutions because the simply can. There are no rules as to how many you can make or consequences of breaking them, unless of course you made a bet with someone but that is in your control. Therefore people feel free to make as many as they please, since no harm will come from breaking them. For example, I feel free to make resolutions because it won't hurt that much if I don't follow through. They are very easy to start, which is another reason why I start them, but they are more difficult to follow through with.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Savyna, with the fact that people make new years resolutions simply because they can.
DeleteMost people create New Year Resolutions to start the new year with positive thoughts of them completing the goal and what would happen to them or someone else after the goal is complete. Without a New Year's Resolution people could think of the New Year's as just a new year, but resolutions are what really set the New Year's day meaning so much more. They think of any resolutions and the outcome, such as eating healthy and getting to "perfect body", which will start off the year with positive thoughts. Others might have to help more people the new year, which will leave them with positive thoughts of helping another person.
ReplyDeleteI like what you're saying about how setting goals brings a positivity to people even if they don't follow through, and I especially can see how it can especially relate to those that may feel insecure about themselves and give them the positivity that they need.
DeleteI feel that we continue to make resolutions every year even though so few of us follow through for a couple of reasons. Some see it as a tradition for the New Year, or a hopeful insight to how the year could go as just a feel-good thing. But I really believe that the process of setting goals that are never made in the light of a new year is due to most people's subconscious thought to conform to society and what others in it are doing in order to relate and compare oneself to another. While it's very true that some, maybe many, do accomplish their goals, I would imagine they have a personal motivation to get through what they have set for themselves whereas the empty goals that are made seem to be from those who want to be able to say that they set goals for themselves. Society pushes people to believe in the "New Year, New Me" philosophy, and you also notice many companies pushing it too so that you may buy their product if it supports reaching your person New Years goal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment of businesses encouraging resolutions because it gives businesses reasons to thrive and gain popularity throughout society. I also agree with people setting empty goals and never believing in themselves due to never wanting to really solve the resolution anyway.
DeleteWe still make resolutions each year because it is a form of a clean slate or a fresh start. We want to improve ourselves, so we set goals or resolutions to help us along the path we want to take on becoming a better person. But many people tend to not follow through with it after the first month or so. I think this happens for a couple of reasons. First, we tend to lose interest quickly and the motivation needed, which makes us feel like a failure from the start. Another is because we haven't fully thought out our goals; if we effectively plan it and want the change in our lives, then we'll have a much better chance at keeping our resolutions. We make resolutions as a promise to ourselves that we will change a bad habit or become better at something. Either way, all we really need to keep it is motivation and the will to do it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about feeling like a "failure from the start" because in order to achieve your resolution one must experience the hardships and obstacles of reaching a goal to further understand how much an individual is willing to change into a better and even happier person.
DeletePeople continue to make resolutions simply because they want to make themselves feel better about their problems. In some cases, people just set a goal to follow the tradition, or just to make one feel like their becoming the new and improved version of themselves, when really no one likes to change. Most people don't stick with their resolutions due to the probability of making wrong, unrealistic goals which don't even aid the main purpose of why they exist, no discipline, the absence of establishing future plans to help with the success of reaching the main goal, or just no perseverance whatsoever. But I honestly believe the main purpose of this cause is people not accepting their flaws or to put in the effort due to the loss of self-esteem or the lack of self motivation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because many people set unrealistic goals and then don't follow through with them.
DeleteEvery year people make new years resolution hoping that they will live a better life than the year before that. With the mindset "New year, New me", people want to have a more enjoyable life. Making new years resolutions gives a new meaning to the new year and gives more purpose to ones life therefore, personally I am all for new years resolutions.
ReplyDeleteMany people still continue to make resolutions because they have the mindset that they will be able to follow through with it and make a change. Even though they set goals for themselves they do not follow through because they may think that it will be too hard to continue or that they can't do it. A lot of people get lazy and do not go through with their resolutions and decide not to do it anymore maybe because they go too busy for it or just didn't like it anymore. Even though many people make resolutions, very few actually finish what they have started and make the change.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you talked about people not following through because it was too hard. People don't take resolutions seriously, if they did they would make a plan to actually follow through.
DeleteNew Year's resolutions are made year round due to the feeling of a chance to restart. People tend to think as every year is a time to learn from your mistakes so the next year you can correct it and have a better life. Making resolutions has an effect on people that make them feel like they need to accomplish their goals and to hopefully feel better about themselves. However not many people will follow through due to them overthinking or going into something free-minded.(and unprepared) Even though there are not many people following through with their resolutions, we cannot forget about the people that do and how enjoyable it is to create these goals.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the reason that people make New Year's resolutions even though they don't follow through on them is because it's a tradition.
ReplyDeletePeople make New Year's resolutions simply because everyone else is doing it. Not many people think about their resolutions, they just make something up so when asked they have an answer. Most people don't even remember what their resolution was after a few months, unless, it was the same one from every other year. If more people start completing their goals maybe others would take it more seriously. A New Year's resolution is just another "everyone else is doing it so why don't I" things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Natalie, because it is true that many people just come up with something as their New Year's resolution since everyone else is making one. Many fail to follow through with their resolutions because they haven't taken the time to come up with a goal that is reasonable for themselves. I agree that New Year's resolutions are often taken lightly because some people just aren't prepared to make a change in their life.
DeleteI agree with you because everyone making up something just because other people are is a perfect reason on why they are never fulfilled. Not really wanting to do something but you tell everyone you want to will just make you seem like a failure, but because everyone does it with resolutions nobody will judge you which makes it easier to do.
DeleteEntering a new year, people think that it is a fresh start. They want to think that all of the bad things that they were doing or wanting to change the year before will be easier to get rid of once its a fresh start. Since it is the beginning of the year one will have a long time to succeed their resolution. Making small goals in order to reach the major one will make it easier to reach. Achieving he smaller goals before with urge someone to keep going and try harder to finish what they started.
ReplyDeleteEven though few people follow through on New Year resolutions, people still continue to make resolutions. For some people it is just a matter of tradition. Another reason is the allure of starting from scratch. The beginning of the year offers a fresh start . People have a natural tendency toward self-improvement. New Years provides one with a goal date in order to accomplish their goals.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Frank because nobody really is going to follow with the resolution, they make it because everyone makes it. Its a goal that people want to reach, but that goal can sometimes be to hard or high to reach. so if people made smaller resolutions maybe thy would be easier to follow through with.
DeleteI agree with you Frank because I believe most people just do it traditionally as well. I also agreed with what you said on the natural tendency toward self improvement because people look for that, even if they don't always follow through.
DeleteNew Years resolutions most likely never get followed through with. Thats because its all about the tradition of it. People make these resolutions not as something they might end up following through with, they make them because everyone makes them. To me, if you can make a new years resolution and follow through with it thats great, but following through with the resolution isn't all. you need to keep it, like if you wanted to work out more and you lost one hundred pounds and you did but you go back to your other eating habits and not working out, if not whats the point. Resolutions are like a trend and if we didn't think of them as some little thing you do on New Years, maybe they could be followed through with and kept on after the year has ended to.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Riley, because most people never go through with them, but they're a tradition. Also, if you lose the habits, it was all for nothing.
DeleteI believe we make resolutions every year because we feel like we have what it takes to complete our goal, regardless of whether we complete it or fail. Most of us don't necessarily complete the goal due to laziness or a lack of motivation or want, but when you have a goal stuck in your head, it can possibly drive you to do it. Most people use the resolution as a fresh start, and that helps people at least attempt the goal that can make their life better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because I think most people just don't complete their resolution because they aren't motivated to do it and they just come up with one because everyone does and it's tradition.
DeleteNew Years Resolutions are made every year but most people almost never follow through with them. It's been tradition to make resolutions and almost everyone makes one but does not complete it due to laziness or they're to busy to make it happen. I believe that if people really wanted to follow through with their resolution they would but must people just come up with one and do not do it. The phrase "New year new me" is really not true unless you set a resolution and commit to it.
ReplyDeleteWe continue to make New Year's resolutions, because it feels good to have a goal. Even if you do not go through with your resolution, at least you set goals for yourself and, hopefully, tried to fulfill that said goal. Also, if you set a goal, and reach it, it is an amazing feeling. Knowing that you accomplished something positive in the New Year is enough for you to write resolutions every year following, in hope of regaining that feeling of accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people make gals because it feels good to have a goal and trying to accomplish something. I do not agree that if you make one and do not follow through that it feels good, I would feel worse.
DeleteWhen entering a new year it is popular to think of it as a fresh start for everything. They exercise this through setting new year resolutions, or just goals set at the beginning of the year. Many people set them but not everyone completes there goal every year. Because not many complete their goal why do they keep making them? I think its because it makes them feel like they are changing /fixing what they do not like about themselves (gym, ect). But not to put everyone one down someone people are good at breaking bad habits and can follow through with their resolution. Overall, trying to break bad habits/follow through with goals is hard and many people like to have the satisfaction of knowing them have one.
ReplyDeleteEvery time new year many people set resolutions as they think it is tradition and they must do it. Most of the time however very few ever follow through with these resolutions. The main focus is to break bad habits but this takes willpower and this wears people out very quickly.
ReplyDeleteEvery year people make New Year resolutions to help them tackle a goal. That may be to stop smoking or lose weight but it helps people fell better and gives them hopes that they can reach there goals. Unfortunately most people don't reach there goals because keeping them takes an extreme amount of willpower. If people break up their goals into mini goals for day to day, then these goals can be accomplished. With a good
Deletemind set you can actually tackle your goals.
Though many people fail to follow through with their New Year’s resolutions, they continue to make them because they have good intentions of keeping them. Sometimes life gets way too busy, and a New Year’s resolution easily becomes the last thing a person thinks about. People see the new year as a clean slate, an opportunity for a fresh start and new beginnings . So even though people struggle to stay true to their resolutions, they create goals for themselves simply because they have a chance to start over again.
ReplyDelete
