FALL -AOW #2 Sir Ernest Shackleton
Watch the video titled "Survivor! The Shackleton Story" on YouTube and answer the following blog question by Friday, September 15 @8 am. The video is 26 minutes long, but you only have to watch the first 13 minutes.
Remember, you have to answer the question yourself as well as respond to ONE other person in class.
1) Your post must include a solid response that includes a well-formed opinion that references the text and/or your own experiences.
2) Your "comment" to another student shouldn't repeat someone else's comment, but rather extend the thinking beyond what was already posted. Don't simply write, "I agree with so and so."
Here's the question: Between Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crews), who do you think had the more difficult journey and why?

Between Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crews), I think Odysseus had the more difficult journey. They both faced many difficult obstacles but Odysseus suffered worse. First of all, Odysseus was gone for 10 years while Shackleton was only gone for about one year. Second, Odysseus went face to face with many obstacles like being trapped in Cyclops cave and his crew being eaten alive, spending 7 years with Calypso hoping for her to marry him, etc.. Shackleton also faced difficult obstacles like how his ship, the Endurance, was stuck in thick ice in the middle of Antarctica. However, as they waited for the ice to pull away, him and his crew played games like soccer on top of the ice so their time gone wasn't all that bad. Clearly, Odysseus and his crew suffered a far more difficult journey.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of your reasons, Hannah. The time difference is a huge factor that effects the hardships of each journey. Also, Calypso and the cyclops did stop him and give him trouble. Shackleton just had to deal with time and the ice, and they had fun doing so. Odysseus and his men did not have fun while traveling back to Ithaca. Even when Odysseus gets back to Ithaca, his violent and dangerous journey still isn't over, and none of his men are with him, but Shackleton returns to peace and he has all of his men. This is why Odysseus's journey was harder than Shackleton's.
DeleteI agree with you because Odysseus was risking his live and had not only doing so, not seeing his family and home for years and years. He also had to worry about people taking his wife from him and his kingdom while Shackleton did not. As well as he had to deal with creatures of all sorts, such as the Cyclops like you said, while Shackleton didn't. I liked your reasoning about how Shackleton's crew got to play fun games while every second Odysseus was risking him and his crews lives with new task to get back to Ithaca, their home land.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crew), I believe Odysseus had the toughest journey. The reason why I think this is because Shackleton was able to keep all his crew members alive, he had more than fifty dogs to pull sleds and keep them company, and they were only gone for two years. Odysseus, on the other hand, was gone for ten years and lost a lot of mean throughout the journey. He had to fight of monsters like Scylla, Charybdis, and a cyclops. He also had to deal with severe punishments from the gods if they stepped out of line. Shackleton didn't need to worry about getting punished by gods. Even though Shackleton's ship, The Endurance, was stuck in the ice and they had to wait for help to arrive, they laughed and played games with each other. Odysseus and his men did not have the opportunity to do that. Therefore, Odysseus had a more difficult journey than Shackleton.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statements because unlike Odysseus, Shackleton not only had all of his men alive at the end of the trip, but also had over fifty sled dogs to help. Having a lot of people with the ability to help get you out of trouble probably significantly decreased the level of stress that was put on Shackleton when "Endurance" got stuck in the ice. The men also played games and waited for help when the ship got stuck, Odysseus could not do that. If he did, he would most likely get punished by Zeus.
DeleteI agree with you Kailey. Odysseus was gone for much longer than Sir Ernest Shackleton. Also Odysseus only had crew with him who ended up dying, where was Sir Ernest Shackleton also had his crew plus about 50 dogs. This makes Odysseus' battle more difficult than Sir Ernest Shackleton.
DeleteI agree with you, Kailey. Odysseus was gone for way longer than Shackleton. Also, Shackleton had a crew during the whole journey and over fifty dogs which helped him. Odysseus had to fight monsters, which was a very hard thing that Odysseus faced several times and Shackleton didn't face once.
DeleteInteresting points Kailey, I agree with you completely, especially on the distance statement. Odysseus was gone for such a greater amount of time than Shackleton, which I could imagine to be hard on not just him, but his crew as well.
DeleteI agree with your opinions, Kailey, because Odysseus had to be apart of his son and wife for 20 years, when Shackleton was only gone for about a year. Also his challenges were far worse then Shackleton's because he had to face a man that was 10 times the size as him, had to see his crew slaughtered alive, and did not have necessities like Shackleton and his crew had. ( for example in the video it showed the men in big jackets and was provided food in the ship )
DeleteBetween the two troublesome adventures, I believe that Odysseus had the harder journey. While Shackleton did endure troubles like his ship becoming stuck in the ice, he did not have to constantly worry about pleasing the gods and goddesses like Odysseus and his men. If the gods were not pleased, the men would get severely punished. For example, in "The Odyssey", Odysseus unknowingly made fun of Poseidon's Cyclops son, Polyphemus. This led to Zeus sending a storm their way which changed their path to get back home to Ithaca. Shackleton also did not have to deal with manipulative and terrifying creatures like the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, Circe, the cyclops, Calypso, or the lotus-eaters. Odysseus had to get by all of them hoping to still have his crew on the way out. For these reasons, I believe Odysseus endured the tougher journey.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you Joselyn. It would be better to worry about the gods. He could ask them for help and guidance. He could blame them when things went wrong. Shackleton has to take full responsibility for anything that happened of went wrong. He deals with other hardships that are just as terrifying. Gigantic storms, freezing temperatures, running out of food, getting lost at sea (which meant death), and letting down his men. Odysseus did not really seem to care about losing his men anyways
DeleteI think that Shackleton had a harder journey than Odysseus. Shackleton's men never disobeyed him, he was forced to kill the dogs, he had to keep how bad the situation really was from his men, and he had to rely on himself for everything. When Odysseus’ men disobeyed him and mistrusted him, he had someone to blame for their deaths. Shackleton would have to take full responsibility for any harm that came to the men that he grew so close to. He aso had to kill the dogs. He and his crew became very attached to them, and used them as a distraction from their bleak situation. To have to order their deaths would have been a very hard thing to do. It was necessary, because they needed food, but it would be hard enough to have to kill them because they could no longer feed them and didn't want to watch them starve, but then to eat them? It would have been very hard to not throw up. Odysseus didn't ever have to sacrifice anything that he was so attached to. Odysseus’ men already knew how hard the situation was. Shackleton had to keep this from them and keep their spirits up. He had no one to worry with or to ask for advice. He had to rely on himself for everything. Odysseus could get mad at the gods, and pray for them to help them. He didn't have the full responsibility. Because of these reasons, Shackleton had the harder journey.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Taylor because Odysseus could share the blame but if anything happened it would be on Shackleton. Shackleton also had to watch the place he and his men called home be destroyed slowly over time. It would have been very easy for Shackleton to tae the guilt and say that it was all his fault that now his men were trapped in freezing conditions with no way to get home.
DeleteWhile I believe that Odysseus had a more difficult journey I think that you bring up some really good points, having to constantly worry about your crew like that would have been incredibly challenging, and to have to eat those animals that you loved so much would have been practically impossible.
DeleteI think that Odysseus and his crew had a harder journey than Sir Ernest Shackleton. Odysseus was faced with dangerous monsters and gods punishing him which made his journey home 10 years long. Where Sit Ernest Shackleton's journey was only about two years. Shackleton also had 50 dogs on board with him, which helped him with pulling sleds and material when they were stuck in the ice. Odysseus and his men had to battle the gods and fight off curses all by themselves. While Odysseus was trapped in Polyphemus' cave he had to witness his men being eaten alive by a massive cyclops. Odysseus really cared about his men (as did Shackleton), but Odysseus ended up losing all of his men due to the curse put on him by Poseidon. Odysseus also had to go into the land of the dead finding that his own mother had committed suicide. He had to finish his journey know that he will never see his mother again. This burden must have made his journey back to Ithaca that much harder. Shackleton wasn't able to find out if a love one had passed. If a love one had passed he wouldn't have known about it until he got back making his journey home (even by a small amount) easier. For these reasons Odysseus' journey was more challenging than Shackleton's.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because while Shackleton did encounter hard times and become stuck Odysseus had a lot harder journey and different experiences to compare. Odysseus was in more of a personal struggle than a personal one because of leaving his wife and son, finding his mother had committed suicide and always trying to please the gods.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crews) , I believe that Odysseus had to endure the more challenging journey. They both had to face tough challenges throughout the journey, but I think that Odysseus`s were more difficult. I think Odysseus`s journey was rougher because he spent ten years in battle and then another ten years at sea, enduring many things along the way. Shackleton and his crew were only gone for two years. Another reason why Odysseus`s journey was harder is because he had to deal with monsters like the Cyclops, Scylla, and Charybdis, and the gods punishments. Shackleton and his crew didn`t have to fight any monsters or go through the gods punishments, they only had to deal with ice. Also, Shackleton and his crew got to play games, cut their hair, and have fun to keep themselves happy and to keep their spirits up, but Odysseus`s crew didn't get to do that. Odysseus eventually lost all of his crew, which forced him to take on the rest of his journey alone, with no help or support. This also probably took a toll on his mind, knowing that his whole crew had been killed and he survived. Shackleton had his full crew and more than fifty dogs alive and helping during the whole journey. Having to deal with the gods and their punishments was a big disadvantage that Odysseus had to face and Shackleton didn't. Odysseus had to constantly listen to what the gods said and follow their rules or he would be severely punished. For example, when Odysseus`s crew slaughtered and ate Helios`s cattle while Odysseus was sleeping, the crew was punished by death, and he was punished by losing his crew and ship because the crew didn't listen to the gods. Shackleton and his crew didn't have to follow any rules or worry about any gods punishing them. Those are some of the reasons why I believe that Odysseus`s journey was more difficult Shackleton`s.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because Odysseus had to fight a lot of nonexistent monsters (in the real world) while Shackleton had to only deal with an iceberg, but both did have to face hard challenges.
DeleteI agree with you because Odysseus did spend 20 years on his journey while Shackleton only spent around 1 year. Odysseus also had to face monsters and face punishments of the gods. Shackleton on the other hand had dogs and only had to deal with ice trapping them. They both had challenging journeys, but Odysseus had it worse.
DeleteI think that both Odysseus and Shackleton had tough interactions during their trips, but I think Odysseus had to face a harder trip home. With comparing the emotional stage Odysseus left his wife and son and that was almost like his motivation and that is more of a personal challenge he was facing and Shackleton could have felt with leaving his home and family but there is a strong heart felt emotion I think Odysseus deals with but doesn't show with what he left behind. Also Odysseus had a lot more different encounters than Shackleton, like facing the cyclops and dealing with the gods while Shackleton felt with his boat stopping an feeding his crew. When I evaluate both stories there are a lot of simulatires between the what they went through but Odysseus definitely faced some out of this world things that Shackleton can't relate with.
ReplyDeletei agree with you, because Odysseus had the motivation of getting home through his wife and kids, and knowing that suitors were going after his wife. Odysseus had harder challenges to face than Shackleton. I like your phrase "Odysseus definitely faced some ou of this world things," because you're right, gods are not part of this world and Odysseus had to face them and their punishment.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crews), I believe Odysseus had the tougher journey. Both men faced many difficult and challenging opticals when tying to meet their goals, but Odysseus suffered the harder tasks. First reason why Odysseus had the tougher journey is because he had a smaller crew and lost half of it when fighting the Cyclopes and the monsters. Shackleton on the other hand had a large crew and none were lost because of fighting a monster, if any of his crew were lost it was because of starvation and or frostbite. Another reason why Odysseus had a harder journey is because of how long him and his crew were gone for. Odysseus alone was gone for 10 years plus when he was with Calypso which was another 7 years. Although Shackleton was gone and suffering for a long period of time, of around a year, it doesn't add up to all the suffering that Odysseus went though. These are just a few reasons why Odysseus's journey was much harder than Shackleton's.
ReplyDeleteEven though Odysseus and Shackleton, both had a hard time, I think Odysseus had a tougher time then Shackleton. Odysseus had to face harder things than Shackleton, like the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops cave, Circe, the Land of the Dead, and Calypso. Shackleton faced being stuck in Antarctica for a year, but he had his crew that played games and kept themselves alive. Another reason Odysseus had a harder time than Shackleton, is the time difference. Odysseus was gone for 20 years, (10 in battle and 10 getting home), while Shackleton was only gone for a year. Shackleton also had the love of his crew and the love of his dogs to keep him alive, while Odysseus eventually lost all his crew mates, leaving him alone for the remainder of his journey. Odysseus also had to endure the punishment of the gods, while Shackleton didn't have to listen to the gods, and risk being punished.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bethany because if the gods had also favored Odysseus's enemy, they could punish Odysseus just out of favoritism and that could easily cost his and his crew's life. Shackleton only had to worry about the temperature and starvation.
DeleteI agree very much with bethany because Odysseus was at sea for 10 years well Shackleton was just there for a year and I'm sure Shackleton had many hardships but never had any mythical creatures to deal with or piousness plants or any gods/goddess that would just pop up to help him out.
DeleteBoth Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton faced troublesome hardships, Odysseus faced tougher challenges. Throughout the whole journey, Odysseus had to worry about everything and had to take leadership all by himself, unlike Shackleton who had Scott. Odysseus also had to face the consequences of the Gods and Goddesses when he did get into problems. He fought immortal creatures such as Charybdis and the Cyclopes, and then had to continue onto to the next. Shackleton's crew also had fun while playing soccer, and having fun dinners most nights. Odysseus had a reluctant and miserable crew. Yes, Sir Ernest Shackleton had very hard times getting home, but Odysseus clearly had harder battles to fight.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Devyn because she makes a very good point about the suffering Odysseus had when Shackleton and his crew were able to make the best of situations.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton, Odysseus had it harder. While Shackleton was facing brutal natural causes, Odysseus was facing brutal natural causes AND mythical creatures. Also he got a bunch of godly smack downs which weren't pretty. Shackleton was fortunate enough to see his children grow up. Odysseus was not. Also all of Odysseus's men died. Shackleton was fortunate enough to have help and company. Odysseus faced hardship emotionally and physically, while I'm sure Shackleton did too, it was much more traumatizing for Odysseus.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that Odysseus faced mythical creatures along with the natural causes. He had to face Scylla and Calypso, and even though he defeated them, he lost his own men in the process. Shackleton didn't. Like you said, Odysseus wasn't able to see his son until 20 years later, who didn't even recognize him and doubted that he was his own father. Shackleton was away from his family for only 2 years, compared to 20 years.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Shackleton and their crews I believe that Shackleton and his crew had a more difficult journey. Even though Odysseus faced many monsters and evil goddesses and even though his crew respected him they often disobeyed him. Him and his crew got to sail around and see different places and meet new people. Shackleton and his crew were stuck on a small ship 1200 miles from civilization, with over 50 dogs aboard. They couldn't meet new people and if they got off the boat they would freeze. After 9 months of their boat being stuck in the ice a wave of pressure became to much for the ship and it kneeled over 30 degrees and started to leak. The crew tried to fix it in the freezing weather but it was no use and and Shackleton lost his ship. They team used the dogs to try and trek 346 miles but the terrain was to uneven for the men or the dogs to travel on. Even tough Odysseus faced many hardships, Shackleton and his crew were stuck for 2 years on ice with freezing temperates and lost the place they called home.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dominica because Odysseus got to travel around. Shackleton was stuck surrounded by white, Odysseus could at least go to new and different places. Shackleton tried to leave, but with the rough terrain his men and dogs couldn't go far. Odysseus got to see many different places, not Shackleton.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Shackleton, Odysseus had a much harder journey. He had to worry about people tasking his wife and his kingdom, while he was gone for 230 years. Keep in mind that he didn't get to see his kid grow up for 20 years either. Imagine not seeing your family until 20 years have passed. Odysseus had to also deal with mythical creatures and gods and goddesses. he had the Cyclops and many others he had to get through, losing lots of his men. And gods and goddesses like Circe who turned his men into animals. He as well had to deal with curses of living a horrible life and death to him and his crew. One curse from the God of Sun made Odysseus and his lose their ship, and Odysseus drifted away from the wreckage and his crew. Shackleton only had to deal with natural disasters, and Odysseus had to deal with gods and goddesses, creatures, curses, and natural disasters. Shackleton had a tough time, but not nearly as bad as Odysseus had.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you dive into how the gods and greater/stronger beings were part of Odysseus' hardships. Mentioning loss of time with family is also really good way to prove the point and present Odysseus in his case. i wanted to extend it more by talking about how not only did Odysseus have to deal with this during the main part of his adventure, but he also was required to return home and kill the suitors after his wife and home as well as making rich sacrifices to all the gods. It just seems he had a lot to go through already and had to continue getting through obstacles even on his own home island of Ithaca.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Shackleton, in my opinion, Odysseus had it a lot harder. While Shackleton dealt with things that any explorer would most likely have to, Odysseus dealt with battles against creatures that don't exist in the regular world. For example , while Shackleton was dealing with being trapped in an iceberg and the extremely cold weather, Odysseus outsmarted a Cyclops and went through the Land of the Dead. Another factor that proves that Odysseus' journey was harder than Shackleton's journey. Odysseus was gone for about 20 years, ten in war and another ten on the way back home, while Shackleton was gone for around a year. In conclusion, in my opinion, Odysseus had it harder than Shackleton, but both had it hard during their journeys.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Kayla, because Odysseus and Shakleton's journeys are both hard on them, but Odysseus had harder challenges to face. For example, he missed out on his son's life and he saw his mother in the Land of the Dead. Meanwhile Shackleton just had to deal with limited resources and having to deal with the cold weather.
DeleteFrom watching the video, you would be able to see that Odysseus' journey was a lot harder than Shackleton's. Obviously they both were faced with challenges, but Odysseus had it a lot more tougher because he lost all of his men, while Shackleton had his crew with him along with nearly 50 dogs. Also because Odysseus was gone for a total of twenty years. Shackleton was gone for about only one year. I think the biggest challenge for Shackleton was probably limited food, shelter, and water. But for Odysseus, it was missing out on his child's life, traveling into the Land of The Dead and seeing his mother there, and having to face a deadly Cyclops, but eventually outsmarting him. Therefore, both journeys were challenging, but Odysseus' journey was much more harder than Shackleton's journey.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Marissa because like you said, both of them were faced with challenges but Odysseus definitely faced more challenges than Shackleton did. Even though they both faced extremely hard challenges along their journeys, Odysseus had to outwit a cyclops and escape a six headed monster, and he missed his son's entire childhood along with people wanting to murder him for their land. Shackleton on the other hand had gotten stuck in the ice and had to try and push his boat to open waters and deal with bad weather, nut he was only gone for a year. Odysseus clearly had a more difficult experience on his journey.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Shackleton, Odysseus had a more difficult journey. In my opinion this is true because Shackleton dealt with the problems that explorers had a high chance of experiencing. Odysseus on the other hand had to deal with mischievous monsters and people who wanted to take his kingdom away. Another thing Odysseus had to deal with on his journey was the gods. The gods could punish Odysseus if they didn't like something he did. Odysseus also had a kid who didn't get to see 20 years of his life and him growing up. Also Odysseus was gone for 20 years while Shackleton was only gone for around 1 year. Odysseus' journey was harder than Shackleton.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment, Ethan. Just like you said, Odysseus had to deal with monsters over and over again, and was constantly facing death and escaping it. The fact that Odysseus's had problems to face even when his journey was done, just goes to show how much worse he had it.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton, I think Shackleton had the more difficult journey. Shackleton and his crew were not skilled for being stuck on the ocean surrounded by icebergs, Odysseus was very skilled at fighting and getting his way out of tricky situations. Shackleton had to worry about the freezing temperatures and how much food they had left, Odysseus could go to an island and get food. Shackleton had to keep over fifty dogs alive plus his men. Odysseus was gone for twenty years, but Shackleton was stuck seeing white everywhere he looked. They both had difficult journeys, but Shackleton had it worse.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Natalie. Shackleton and his crew didn't sign up for being stuck in the middle of the arctic, and so they were not as skilled in getting out of that situation. And I don't think anyone would be truly ready for something like that.
DeleteBetween Shackleton and Odysseus (and crews) I believe that Shackleton had the harder journey, because he had to take a ship with over fifty dogs a a crew to the antarctic. They also had to climb for three days with poor equipment. Their ship held up in freezing temperatures for two years but in the end it couldn't withstand the pressure of the ice and cold temperatures. In the video it says that after three days after Shackleton said to abandon ship, the Endurance met it's demise. The crew had to go on foot 350 miles over uncrossable terrain to the nearest supply depot to get to civilization. In the end I think that Shackleton had the harder journey due to the terrain and circumstances that they went through.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Miranda. Sir Ernest Shackleton did have a more difficult journey he faced one of the most treacherous and dangerous climates on Earth without even properly preparing for and he had to cross impossible obstacles that no one had even attempted
Deleteto cross before.
Odysseus had the more difficult journey than Shackleton because although both faced tough obstacles, Shackleton's wasn't as bad as Odysseus'. Odysseus lost all his men and was the only one who survived. It took him 20 long years to get to back to Ithaca to his wife and son, but Shackleton didn't stay stranded for very long. He had supplies, dogs, and his crew to help, whilst Odysseus had nobody but the gods and himself. Shackleton had bit more of a luxury than Odysseus in some ways, too. His crew listened to him and respected and never doubted him, but Odysseus' men, although they respected him greatly, at times, they doubted him. They didn't build a whole sense of trust and they also didn't listen to him, which they were punished for.
ReplyDeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crews), I believe that Odysseus had a more difficult journey. Odysseus had much more troublesome encounters compared to Shackleton. Odysseus had to fight off multiple beasts such as the Cyclops, the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis. Odysseus also had the issue of the gods always watching him and punishing him for him and his crews mistakes. Odysseus had so much of a longer journey as well. Shackleton didn't seem to have it nearly as tough as Odysseus. Not even close. Although Shackleton's journey was troublesome and tough, Odysseus, in my opinion, had a harder adventure.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Conner because Odysseus had a much worse fate than Shackleton. Odysseus not only had to face much worse enemies like the sirens and scylla, but he also had to deal with his crew betraying him, whereas Shackleton was followed by his crew faithfully.
DeleteI disagree Anthony because I believe that even though Shackleton was stuck in Antarctica for 2 years Odysseus was stuck on the open sea for 10 years. Also , Shackleton did not have gods punishing him , unlike Odysseus.
DeletePersonally, I believe that Shackleton and his crew went through a more difficult journey than Odysseus and his men. At multiple times throughout the story, Odysseus had help or care from greater beings, whereas the journey and how it went was completely left up to Shackleton. Both characters are human, but there's not the level of almost 'immortality' in The Odyssey that would be present in a real situation like Shackleton's. I find it a little unfair to compare the two as there were no gods present to help or harm in the story of Shackleton, but I really feel him and his crew had it harder as it was in freezing conditions, they were eventually ship-less, terrain was rough, and they didn't have the best equipment or gear as well as having to deal with fifty plus dogs.
ReplyDeleteAnthony, I would have to agree with part of reasoning. I do agree that it is a bit unfair to compare the two journeys when there were gods present for Odysseus, but none in Shackleton's instance. However, the gods' punishments that were thrown at Odysseus were far worse than what Sir Ernest Shackleton had to face. It is true that the conditions of Shackleton's journey were not ideal, but at least he had a crew to get him through those difficulties. I understand how you would see the gods' presence as being an advantage to Odysseus, but I think they were more of an obstacle to him. Both crews faced challenging journeys, but I think Shackleton had the easier of the two.
DeleteI disagree with your statement of Sir Earnest Shackleton having it more challenging than Odysseus due to fictitious actions taking place in Odysseus journey compared to Sir Earnest Shackleton's ship becoming stuck in ice. Furthermore, Shackleton was provided with shelter from his ship, unlike Odysseus who has been travelling on sea with no comfort of the thought of home. Overall, Odysseus had a harder journey than Sir Earnest Shackleton because Odysseus was faced with fictitious monsters and events.
DeleteI agree with Anthony because Odysseus had the luxury of the gods and other divines help. Shackleton was trapped with no help at all. Odysseus was "trapped" with a beautiful goddess who loved him for seven years while Shackleton and his men had the constant fear of dying at anytime.
DeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and all the crews), I believe that Odysseus had a more difficult journey. They both faced difficult challenges like for Sir Ernest Shackleton, being stuck in ice with no civilization close by. Although Sir Ernest Shackleton got to have necessities. In the video it showed that they were having fun playing soccer on their free time, and having dogs for comfort, and looked like they were in warm clothes and that they did not have too much trouble keeping warm. Odysseus had to face challenges that humans can't possibly think about surviving. He faced being stranded out on sea, fighting enemies, getting out of unspeakable challenges, being judged and watched closely by someone who could kill him in an instant,(the gods), etc. While Sir Ernest Shackleton got the love and comfort of sled dogs, Odysseus and his crew had to be apart from their families for about 20 years! Crew wise, Sir Ernest Shackleton had it easier, because his crew respected and listened to all of his demands. While Odysseus had the respect and trust of his crew but they still went behind his back a couple times and brought him into danger. Lastly Shackleton did not have to face his crew being eaten alive or having them be wiped out, instead he and his crew got to survive. I admit that both men had difficult journeys that none of us would even imagine of facing, but overall Odysseus had the most dreadful journey.

ReplyDeleteBetween the journeys of Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton (and crews), I believe that Odysseus had the more difficult one. One factor that proves Odysseus' journey to be more challenging is the difference in elapsed time. Odysseus suffered 20 demanding years of travel, while Shackleton faced around 3. Another reason Odysseus' journey was more difficult is because of the obstacles he had to face. Sir Ernest Shackleton faced many obstacles like the ship being destroyed by ice, an extremely cold climate, and having to travel by foot to civilization. However, Odysseus faced much worse. He had to deal with a cyclops, a 6 headed sea monster, a witch, punishments from the gods, and so much more. On top of that, Odysseus' men died along the way, while Shackleton still had his crew to help him get through any situation. Despite the many disadvantages Shackleton had to overcome, there is greater evidence to prove that Odysseus had a much more difficult journey.
ReplyDeleteBetween Sir Ernest Shackleton and Odysseus, Odysseus and his crew has a more difficult journey. While Shackleton had a good crew who respected him and listened to him Odysseus’ crew often disobeyed him and would get him into more trouble. Also Odysseus had larger than life threats against him such as punishments from gods and other threats like the sirens and the cyclops. Also Sir Ernest Shackleton kept all his men alive while Odysseus’ men all died and he had to make the rest of his journey by himself. He also had to deal with the emotional damage of learning that his mother died because of how much she missed him along with how much he missed his wife and son. His journey was also more difficult because his journey was one that took place after he had fought in a war so he believed that he would be able to return back to his home but was than faced with many setbacks.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew, Odysseus and Shackleton are very similar in the way that they are both stubborn and pig headed they both do what they want and how they want for example when Odysseus went to the cyclopses cave his crew wanted to steal everything and run and Shackleton went on his ship he decided that it be best if he went through the ice both Odysseus and Shackleton are very sure on what they want and how they want it done. Both of them do consider there crew very much and make sure they are safe at all times.
ReplyDeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton I believe Odysseus had the more difficult journey because he had to go to more places than Sir Ernest Shackleton and Odysseus got himself into more trouble by taunting the cyclops, Polythemus, and he throws a giant chunk of rock at Odysseus and his crew while Sir Ernest Shackleton’s boat got stuck in ice and he and his crew had to hike on the ice and try to manually push the boat out into open waters.
ReplyDelete
DeleteI agree with you Odysseus had a more difficult journey as well. Even though he was the cause of some reasons he was having a more difficult journey. Sir Ernest Shackleton did at least try to push the boat out of the ice and did not succeed was a downfall but they keep going.
Between Sir Shackleton and Odysseus I believe Shackleton had a more difficult journey because he had to figure out what to do in inhospitable conditions with the weather below freezing and he had to overcome obstacles he had never encountered or trained for. For example he was an explorer and he had to cross mountains no man nor mountaineer had ever overcome. While Odysseus' journey was also extremely trying he could always pray to the gods for guidance or blame them for his and his crews misfortune. In fact he had multiple gods aid him during the course of his journey including Hermes and Athena. Hermes aided Odysseus on many an occasion including the time were he gave Odysseus moly to make him immune to Circe's magic.
ReplyDeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton, plus their crews, I believe that Odysseus had a harder journey. Overall, they both had extremely hard journeys without a doubt, considering they were both lost from home for a period of time. Odysseus had one thing Sir Ernest Shackleton, Gods punishing and watching their every move. Odysseus especially being a very confident and tricky person gets himself in too a lot of trouble from the Gods, like taunting the Cyclops after taking his eye out. Although as we learned Sir Ernest Shackleton was a very good at getting out of tight situations as well as Odysseus. Both is a great trait for what happen them. Sir Ernest Shackleton also had it a little easier trip with the fact that he had essentials to live on a day to day basis. Plus they also had entertainment like soccer to play when they got bored. Overall you can see just a little Odysseus had just a little bit of a harder journey the Sir Ernest Shackleton.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your reasoning because Odysseus faced supernatural beings, not just the natural environment, which is what Sir Ernest Shackleton had to deal with. Odysseus dealt with a lot of challenges due to his arrogant nature. The gods had a habit of punishing him because he was often too prideful, and he often made wrong decisions. I think that the attitude of the two leaders made for very different journeys. While Sir Ernest Shackleton had a very wise mind and was able to figure things out, Odysseus had a arrogant and deceitful attitude which led him to more trouble than needed.

ReplyDeleteBetween the hardships of Odysseus and Sir Earnest Shackleton (and crews), I believe that Odysseus had a harder struggle through his journey because of the punishments the gods keep sending him, his emotions towards individuals, and the lack of trust within Odysseus's crew. For example, as Odysseus was sailing away from the blind cyclops, his emotions got to him leading to the curse put upon him from Poseidon (the cyclops's son). In addition, he received a bag containing the North, South, and East winds (leaving the West wind to sail to Ithaca faster) from Aeolus, ruler of winds. Farther into his journey, his men are flushed with jealousy, betrayal, and greed from the thought of gold given to them, and Odysseus taking it for himself. Which leads to his men opening the bag of winds, sending them off course. Lastly, he is punished several times by the gods (Zeus, Apollo, and Poseidon). As Odysseus's ship is destroyed from the vengeance of Apollo (due to his men killing his cattle), killing his men and leaving Odysseus to fend for himself on the open sea heading to Charibdus and Scylla. Overall, Odysseus had a harder struggle during his journey Sir Earnest Shackleton doesn't have several gods watching his every move and hasn't been apart from his family for 10 years.
ReplyDeleteBetween Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton, Shackleton had the more difficult journey. Sir Ernest Shackleton was but a normal man who wanted to keep his men safe. On the other hand, Odysseus had help or care from divine beings. Weather conditions and environment also play a key role. Odysseus was lost at sea in the tropics but Ernest was trapped in Antarctica in the crippling cold. Shackleton and his crew were stuck miles from civilization, with over 50 dogs aboard. They couldn't meet new people and if they got off the boat they would freeze. They team used the dogs to try and move but the terrain was to uneven for the men or the dogs to travel on. Because of this and the lack of food the men had to eat the dogs that they cared for. Even tough Odysseus faced many hardships Shackleton underwent a much more difficult journey.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you because Odysseus had a harder journey. Even though Shackleton was in a worse climate, he had less obstacles. Since Odysseus did have a access to other communities, he had more distractions which caused him to stay on his journey for longer. He also stayed in one place for a long period of time just like Shackleton did when he and his crew got stranded in Antartica; however, unlike Shackleton this happened to Odysseus many times.
DeleteI see where you're coming from but I totally disagree with you because Odysseus had to face mythical creatures that getting in his ways of getting home and things that would kill him/his men. While Shackleton only had to face the climate and having to travel by foot. Odysseus also had a way longer trip and his whole crew ended up dying and he was the only man to get home to his family.
DeleteI believe that Odysseus had the more difficult journey. He was out at sea for many years, and encountered many obstacles. A major difference between Odysseus and Sir Ernest Shackleton is that Odysseus had to face mythical creatures, such as witches, sirens, cyclopses, etc., whereas Sir Ernest Shackleton dealt only with natural occurrences, mainly the ice. Sir Ernest Shackleton did, however, face many difficulties. His ship collapsed in the snow, the weather continued to worsen with no signs of slowing, and the ice built up around his ship. Still, these challenges don't compare to poking the eye out of a giant Cyclops, having many members of his crew get turned into pigs, dealing with sirens who were attempting to enchant them, getting past Scylla and Charybdis, and the many other obstacles that Odysseus faced. Therefore, Sir Ernest Shackleton did face the challenge of one of nature's most powerful resources, but Odysseus faced much more difficult obstacles.
ReplyDeleteBetween Odysseus and Shackleton I think that Odysseus had a harder journey. Even though they both had tough journeys, I believe that Odysseus had a more of difficult journey because it lasted longer and his whole crew died. He also had to go through more obstacles that were harder to get out of like the Cyclops and going to the Land of the Dead. Odysseus needed to keep his mind set on getting home but constantly had something distracting him but Shackleton only had one big thing distracting him but it was getting in the way of him getting to his destination. Overall they both had very difficult journeys but Odysseus' was worse.
ReplyDeleteI believe that between Odysseus and Shackleton, Odysseus had the more difficult journey. I believe this because even though they both faced many difficult situations, Odysseus faced much more difficult situations, where he had to pass horrible monsters, he had his crew betray him, and he had to endure many of his crews' death. Whereas Shackleton's crew followed him without question. However, most of Odysseus' journey was spent in comfort, Shackleton also had a place to be comfortable on his ship. I think even though both of them faced extremely difficult journeys, Odysseus had a worse fate.
ReplyDeleteB0th Odysseus and Shackleton faced many challenging obstacles on their journeys but I think that Odysseus had a more challenging journey. I believe his was more challenging because he had a way longer trip, his whole crew ended up dying before the journey was over, and he had to overcome many creatures, Gods, and Goddesses that get in his way of reaching home and will do anything to stop that from happening. Such as The Cyclops which was a one-eyed giant who's dad is Poseidon and the Cyclops was stabbed in the eye by Odysseus cousin him to blind and little did Odysseus know The Cyclops dad was Poseidon and he asks his dad to send obstacles their way so they can't reach home. When Odysseus overcomes an obstacle their is always another one short after. Whereas Shackleton only had to face the weather and having to walk to safety which was really far Therefor, I strongly think tat Odysseus had a way harder journey he had to overcome to get home alive.
ReplyDeleteEven though Shackleton had a hard trip Odysseus had it harder because he had to fight off a Cyclope after being captured , had to go on a 10 year trip home , and had to go to the land of the dead.
