FALL AOW #1 Can You Call Yourself an Adventurer with a GPS Safety Beacon?
Read the article titled "Can You Call Yourself an Adventurer with a GPS Safety Beacon?" and answer the following blog question by Friday, September 1 @8 am.
Remember, you have to answer the question yourself as well as respond to ONE other person in class.
1) Your post must include a solid response that includes a well-formed opinion that references the text and/or your own experiences.
2) Your "comment" to another student shouldn't repeat someone else's comment, but rather extend the thinking beyond what was already posted. Don't simply write, "I agree with so and so."
Here's the question: In what ways do you feel that Odysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer? Use evidence from the article as support.

Odysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he is passionate about what he does. In the article, it states, "They were just doing what adventurers have always had to do -- relying on their own skills, and a little bit of luck, to push through adversity and come home alive." Odysseus relied on his skills. He was intelligent, but his curiosity got the best of him. He was able to outwit the Cyclops because of his skills. He too relied on his luck from the gods, but not as much as his own abilities. He is a true adventurer because no matter what adversity is being put in his way, he is always overcoming it, and just for one reason only, to come home alive.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your points on how he only wants to come home and find that a valuable reason for him to always be ready. Like you I also included his curiosity from the cyclops story because it showed us a side of Odysseus that we hadn't seen before in the reading.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he does not have a set itinerary of what his day and even life will look like. More to an adventurer he lives each day with what it will be bring and is always up for more challenges. He could have not gone to the cyclops but instead continued on, when fine food and wine was offered he was curious about the cyclopes and went for more like a true adventurer. Odysseus is also always on his toes, thinking ahead and planning an escape when things go sideways. Like a true adventurer Odysseus has a plan and back up plan, is able to enjoy the many adventures he is taking and always has his eye on the prize
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. Adventurers do take risks and so did Odysseus, which is what makes him a true adventurer. Also, like you said, they don't know when they're coming back. They don't know if they'll live until the next day. I never thought about that.
DeleteI also agree that he was always having his eye on the prize and never letting anything get in his way
DeleteI very much agree with your statement about Odysseus being on his toes and always having a back-up plan. It also demonstrates how cunning he is due to the type of plans he develops, and how quickly he constructs one as well.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he is very clever and thinks ahead in troubled situations. Odysseus had skills that his men didn't have when fighting the cyclops. He thought ahead and out smarted the cyclops multiple times to escape the cave. In times of trouble, adventurers have to think outside of the box and thetas all Odysseus did was think outside of the box to outwit the cyclops. He is a true adventurer and no matter what is standing in his way, he can always get through it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because Odysseus is always able to be ones step ahead of the competition. He is always able to outwit the main enemy and over come all of the obstacles that the gods through at him.
DeleteI agree with that because he tricked the Cyclops several times and saved himself and his men by thinking ahead and being clever. They wouldn't have been able to escape from the cave if it wasn't for Odysseus.
DeleteI too believe that Odysseus has more qualities of being and adventurer and is also more strong-willed than his crew. Without the help of Odysseus, they would not have made it out of these dangerous situations.
DeleteI agree with this too. Odysseus was able to outsmart the cyclops and he has the traits of an adventurer that none of his crew has. He was also the one to drive them on when they had no hopes of getting back to Ithaca. Although he makes decisions that are not so great, he is, overall, a great leader to his crew.
DeleteI agree with your statement because Odysseus knew more than his crew. Without him, they would have probably not have been able to escape the cave. Even though Odysseus can be a little stubborn, he plays a major role in his crew's survival.
DeleteOdysseus embodies a true adventure because he goes with the flow. When he ended up in the Cyclops cave he showed he is an adventurer by basically improvising. He had no idea what he was going to do or how we was going to make it out alive when Cyclops closed the entryway with the rock, but he was able to think on his feet and escape. All while only losing a few of his men. Odysseus also proves that he is a true adventurer because he isn't afraid to risk his life. He does everything and anything that he can in order to keep his men and himself save. An example of this is when they stopped at Lotus Eaters and had to pull his men off the island and tie them down in order for them to actually be able to leave. Another example is the fact that he was able to fight of Circe's spell and is able to talk her into letting him and his men go safely. Even though they stay there for a full year. Just like in the article where the people go on adventures even when they know that they can be risking their lives. They still risk their lives to say that they have done it. They are brave, even thought they know that there is a system that they can use if they do end up in a life threatening situation. These examples prove that Odysseus is a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because it is true some adventurers (such as myself) improvise but are always able to get back on there feet (or for me were never on their feet in the first place.) and think of a clever and non conspicuous way out of a sticky situation.
DeleteOdysseus represents a true adventurer because of the risks he is willing to take. He is very courageous and at times a little daft even though we all have those moments. He is mainly clever and thinks ahead as most leaders do. When he encountered the Cyclops who asked for his name he thought ahead of how he would kill the cyclops and knew he'd draw neighboring listeners, so he replied 'Nohbody.'
ReplyDeleteTrue adventures also would of anything for their companions. When Odysseus could've left and not gotten himself in danger he stared it right in the face and faced it anyway because he knew when his men needed them the most.
I agree with the part about how he is willing to take risks because in the Cyclops Odysseus takes so many risks whether they benefitted him in the end or not. I also agree that Odysseus is very clever because of how many times Odysseus outwitted the Cyclops.
DeleteI agree about how he steps up for his men when they need him the most. He is the only one to come back for his men at Ciones island. The rest of them say to just leave, without a thought of their fellow sailors. He is also the only one willing to answer the cyclops' questions.
DeleteI agree, he seems to stare at danger and not care that he could be hurt and even killed. That shows true adventurers spirit.
DeleteI agree that Odysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventure through his sheer will to take risks. However, I disagree with the notion that true adventures would do anything for their companions. An adventurer often seeks for his own gain. When choosing to stay in the Cyclopes cave Odysseus did not think of how this would affect the men with him at the time. Even when his men advised him against his idea he ignored them and his adventurous personality got the better of him. A true leader thinks of how his actions may affect others. Instead Odysseus decision results in the death of six men.
DeleteI agree that Odysseus is clever because he is always thinking ahead, for example when he decided to tell the cyclops that he lost his ship.
DeleteThe qualities Odysseus embodies from a true adventurer includes his sense of adventure. Yes, I know, this sounds a bit cheesy, but hear me out. In the beginning of "The Cyclops", Odysseus and his men venture into the island they sailed upon to investigate what resources lie in the Cyclops's cavern. As the men cowered from the thought of the giant returning, they begged Odysseus to load what supplies they needed and set sail to Ithaca once more. Yet, Odysseus refused the offer and proceeded further into the cave to observe the immense beast more closely. As many can see, Odysseus does not turn back in the eye of fear, like many of his men did, but go further into the cave to seek the unknown of the Cyclops. For example, Jill Homer states "... athletes battling inhumane conditions on the Iditarod trail had no sense of the worries spectators watching from the warm comfort of their homes. They were just doing what adventures have always had to do- relying on their own skills, and a little bit of luck, to push through [hardships] and come alive" (par. 14). This clearly supports the view of Odysseus's peculiar sense of adventure. In doing so, also does not express an output of worry, unlike the hint his men sends us. Take that for a cheesy thought.
ReplyDeleteThese are great points, I like how you really contrast Odysseus and his men. The differences are really emphasized and make Odysseys' adventuring spirit stand out. I also agree with everything you said about him, especially how his curiosity sort of leads him on the adventures he takes.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because no matter what situation he is in, he usually thinks ahead about how he can get out of the tricky situation. For example, when he was stuck in the Cyclops cave, he thinks ahead and tells the giant that his name is Nohbdy so that when he is hurt and the other Cyclops come then he will say that Nohbdy hurt him and the others will leave. Also, so many bad and unfortunate things happened to him while on his journey, and he never gave up on surviving and finding his way back home. He even kept trying after he was so close to his home that he could see it and the crew opened the bag of wind that was a gift and blew them away from home. These things prove that Odysseus is a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because Odysseus does do a good job with thinking ahead and getting out of bad situations beforehand. It was also good to include how he never gave up on his journey even though many obstacles got in the way of going home.
DeleteOdysseus embodies a true adventurer because he doesn't always have a plan. He does what he feels is right. He is also very curious like any true adventurer. For example in the Cyclops, Odysseus lets his curiosity get the best of him and instead of just stealing the Cyclops' things, he waits to see the Cyclops. Then when he, and his men, are in real danger he thinks of a plan on the spot. He is also very brave, and just like any other true adventurer, he never lets his fear get the best of him. He seeks adventure and gets a rush when he finds it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because as you said he is very curious and he defiantly does let his curiosity get the better of him but, this is also a great quality to have as he is able to dive right into danger.
DeleteI agree with what you said about doing what feels right. He makes up a plan that almost always works out. He goes with his gut instincts like a true adventurer.
DeleteI agree with this statement because he's smart and has clever instincts. You're right with how curious he is, and most times thats how he gets into situations.
DeleteOdysseus embodies a true adventurer because he is able to lead a group of men into a cyclopses cave and make it out with most of his men but what makes him a true adventurer is he will encounter danger but doesn't shy away examples of his risk taking adventures are when humanoid his men went to the island of the cyclopses and his men wanted to take the resources and get but of the island but Odysseus thought maybe it be better if they got a good look at the place (even if he didn't get out with all his men). Another example is when Odysseus was able to withstand Circec magic and rescue the rest of his men. Odysseus has shown that even in danger he will do whatever he has to to get his men and himself back to Ithaca, Odysseus is ready to do whatever he can for his men to keep them safe.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he acts fast in emergencies. He pays attention to detail so he can return home alive. When he and his men got trapped in the Cyclops's cave he started to think of a plan, he had to work with what he had and he only got one shot to escape. Odysseus is smart by telling the Cyclops that his name is Nohbdy so they can't track him down. He is curious, it get's him into trouble at times, but like any good adventurer he has a backup plan. Odysseus always has the end in mind with some risky stops along the way, but that's the way he likes it.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of being a true adventurer because he's quick on his toes and an excellent problem solver. Odysseus is faced with problems and every time he escapes. For instance, when he is trapped in the Cyclopes cave, he creates a strategic plan to escape. He lied about his name so the Cyclopes wouldn't know who he was, he hid the spear, got the Cyclopes drunk, and then escaped hiding under the rams. This shows he is a quick thinker and perseveres.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because he didn't have a plan from the start, like first we will camp in the cave, then get locked in the cave with the man eating Cyclops then we will escape on a goat. He got himself and crew stuck in that situation, and did his best to get most of his men out of that situation, and didn't blame anyone else.

ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of being a true adventurer because he is brave, smart, curious, and has a good sense of direction. He is brave because when he is staring into the face of death, weather that be a cyclops, a terrifying storm sent by the gods, a powerful witch, or strange people obsessed with lotus, he is able to speak out to try and save himself and his men. He is smart because he is able to come up with a plan B on the spot, and this is often a life or death situation. An example of this is when he tricks the cyclops into getting him drunk, saying his name is Nobhdy, and sneaking out under sheep. He also has an intense sense of curiosity. Even when he is risking himself and crew he must see things for himself. An example of this is when he is told his men have been turned into swine, and his men say that they should just leave now, Odysseus must find out what has happened for himself. He also has a very important sense of direction. When he is in places that he has never even heard of, or lost out in the middle of the ocean, he is somehow able to know what way is home. I wish I could do that, I am still having trouble memorizing how to get home from school:) All of these qualities are very important to being a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the characteristics of a true adventurer because he uses his wits and luck. In the article, Can you still call yourself an adventurer if you use a GPS safety beacon, author Jill Homer says," They were just doing what adventurers have always had to do - relying on their own skills, and a little bit of luck, to push through adversity and come home alive." that is exactly what Odysseus is doing, he is using his skills and some luck to push through the hard parts of his journey.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Odysseus embodies the characteristics of a true adventurer because he uses his own intellect to figure out how to solve conflict and get out of a tough situation. For example, when asked by the Cyclops where his boat was located, Odysseus lies to him and says that his boat broke, when in reality, it was perfectly fine. Odysseus also led the Cyclops to believe that his name was "Nohbdy" (pronounced "nobody") so when Odysseus harms the monster and his wailing awakens the other Cyclopes in that neighborhood, he tells them that Nohbdy harmed him. This cleverness has helped him and his crew to get out of a lot of danger.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement because I thought Odysseus was very clever in his adventure with the Cyclops, he used his clever thinking to get out of something no one thought was possible. Without his cleverness, him and his crew would have never made it past Troy.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he can get around obstacles and think up solutions quickly. Examples of this could be from when he has to drag his men back to the ship after they succumb to the Lotus or when he needs to outwit Polyphemus. In the article, the author says that "They [Athletes in harsh conditions on a trail] were just doing what adventurers have always had to do - relying on their own skills, and a little bit of luck, to push through adversity and come home alive" (Jill, par. 12). This quote is a perfect representation of Odysseus, using his skills and luck from the Gods he prays and makes sacrifices to to get him through peril and safely back home to Ithaca.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment because Odysseus is very good at getting around obstacles. he used his brain and his cleverness to overcome these obstacles. He possesses qualities essential to be a true adventurer.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of being a true adventurer because he uses his brain and thinks a few steps ahead. Odysseus comes across multiple situations where his cleverness saves him and the lives of many others. When him and his men came across the island of the Lotus Eaters, Odysseus made a smart decision when he only sent three men to scout out the island because he didn't want to risk losing more men than he could afford to lose. Another time where Odysseus's smarts came into play was when he and his men were stuck in the Cyclops's cave. He told the Cyclops his name was Nohbody so when the other Cyclops asked who was it hurting you, he would respond with "nobody." Odysseus didn't need these fancy GPSs because he's a true adventurer. Like Jill Homer said, "They were just doing what adventurers have always had to do - relying on their own skill, and a little bit of luck, to push through adversity and come home alive..."
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, because if Odysseus did not use his brain, it is very likely that they would not have made it out alive from any situation they were in. The quote you put in is a great reflection of what Odysseus did through out his journeys. Theses skills are what make a true adventurer an adventurer. Odysseus may be outspoken, but he uses that brain and puts it to good use.
DeleteHe embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he faces any danger no matter what it may be using only his wits and skills as a captain a leader and as a warrior. He will defeat any adversary using his strength military abilities and tactics or if the adversary is to strong to overcome using brute force he will use his intelligence to defeat them.
ReplyDeleteI agree because it is true that Odysseus has great skills as a captain and a leader because he can separate his men into divisions to explore places. He is also very smart with his military tactics by using his intelligence to out wit the opponent. He does this with the cyclops by telling him his name was Nohbody and using his tactics to stab him in the eye.
DeleteI agree a true adventurer overcomes obstacles without a safety net or tracking device to protect them. Odysseus was able to accomplish great things and overcome a cyclops and a sorceress using only his wits.
ReplyDeleteEthan R- Make sure you hit "reply" below the poster to whom you are replying instead of starting a "new" post as your reply to whomever because it's hard to tell to WHOM you are replying. Were you replying to Ethan S. reply to you? I'm lost...
DeleteOdysseus embodies a true adventurer because he is quick on his feet and thinks ahead. One way he does this is by telling Polyphemus that his name is Nohbody. Then later on when the other cyclopes come to help Polyphemus shouts that nobody hurt him. He also hides under the sheep to get out of the cave. If Odysseus was someone who taking an adventure in modern times he wouldn't use a GPS because he wants to face danger. Jill Homer explains," They were just doing what adventurers have always had to do - relying on their own skill, and a little bit of luck, to push through adversity and come home alive[...]"(par. 14)
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about Odysseus being a true adventurer because of his quick thinking and I also think that this trait enables him to be much more risky and curios than other adventurers like those seen in the article. This trait allows him to do those things because he does not need the safety net that others say they require, making him a true adventurer.
DeleteI believe that Odysseus embodies the qualities of being a true adventurer because of his curiosity and his quick problem solving brain. Without his curiosity millions of things would have happened good and bad. For example, if it weren't for his curiosity Odysseus's crew would have never left Circe's house and would of been cast as pigs forever. However his curiosity has also gotten him in dangers like the Cyclops situation, but with his quick clever thinking he blinded the cyclops and escaped the island. His bravery and curiosity has proved that he is a determined leader. Without his curiosity, there would be know adventure, but with no problem solving brain, there would be no story. ( because he would die)
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment because as you said without Odysseus' curiosity there would have been no story. Odysseus' curiosity plays a huge roll in his stories and drives him to try new ideas. This quality makes him a true adventurer.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he can plan strategies in advance just in case anything goes wrong, he can lead his men through the most dangerous conditions, and he is motivated to get back to his home. He was able to convince his men to leave the Lotus-Eaters and give them hope about finding their home, he was able to outsmart the cyclops multiple times and get his men safely back to the ships, and he did everything he could to keep them traveling, no matter how harsh the seas and storms were and no matter where they were or how far away they were from their destination. These are all qualities of a brave, committed, willing adventurer that will do anything to get back to his home.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement because Odysseus definitely demonstrates that he is a true adventurer, given the qualities that you explained. It is true that Odysseus can plan ahead. The example of the Cyclops encounter really shows that Odysseus was quick to think ahead, being that he outsmarted Polyphemus every step of the way. Like you said, Odysseus showed that was very dedicated to the journey and was willing to take any risk to make it back to Ithica. Overall, I find that your reasoning of why Odysseus is a true adventurer is accurate.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of being a true adventurer because he always has a plan, no matter how inconvenient the situation. His ability to always think ahead also makes him an adventurer. To illustrate, when Odysseus decided to enter the cave, he had no intentions of being trapped by a cyclops. However right upon entry, he handled the situation like a professional. One of the first things the Cyclops asked Odysseus was where his ship was. Quick thinking, Odysseus replied by lying to him and saying that the ship got wrecked. This was very clever of him because he realized that the Cyclops was asking so he could destroy the ship. Another time Odysseus showed the quality of being quick thinking was when Polyphemus asked him for his name. Of course he didn't really tell the Cyclops his name was Odysseus, but instead told him he was Nohbody. So when the Cyclops was screaming in pain from being stabbed and telling his fellow Cyclopes that Nohbody hurt him, they left him alone and went back to sleep. The choice to enter the cave in the first place was a true adventurer move, because it showed that Odysseus was willing to take a big risk. In the Odyssey, Odysseus clearly demonstrates that he is a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteAn adventurer is defined as a person who is willing to take risks. Odysseus illustrates the qualities of a true adventurer because his adventure is raw. He has no knowledge of what dangers or benefits may come upon him. When entering the cave of Polyphemus Odysseus makes an unwise but adventures decision to stay in the Cyclops home. Instead of ransacking the den and leaving as soon as possible curiosity overtook him and he chose to stay to see the monster. Not knowing the consequences the Cyclopes would present Odysseus still took the risk and stayed. Unlike the two men and their teenage sons who hiked the Grand Canyon with their Spot devices Odysseus is on a adventure with no way of calling for immediate help that will save him. Instead when faced with conflict on his journey he must improvise and use his intellect to get himself out of dilemmas.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying because true adventurers explore and take risks that others wouldn't. Such as when he decided to enter the cave not knowing what he'll find but staying and waiting for something to come back to the cave causing himself and his crew members misfortune. Although he caused them problems, it wasn't anything Odysseus couldn't handle.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the characteristics of a true adventurer because he is not afraid to try new things or ideas even if they will get him in trouble. For example when Odysseus and his men escape the cyclopes Odysseus begins to taunt the cyclops and the cyclops picks up a giant chunk of the mountain and throws it at Odysseus' ship bringing them back to the island. Odysseus and his men get away again and once again he begins to taunt the cyclops getting him and his crew into even more trouble because the cyclops then reveals he is the son of Poseidon and puts a curse on Odysseus and his men. Odysseus not being afraid to speak out or be afraid of the curse shows he is a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities off being a true adventurer, because he is not one to turn down a challenge, even when he is faced against an impossible challenge. For example when Odysseus has to escape the cyclops and his men are being killed he doesn't panic instead he stays calm and outwits the cyclops. Odysseus also decides to save his men from Circe even after they caused him to sail of course.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of an adventurer through his actions and attitude to different scenarios in the Odyssey. One of the traits Odysseus embodies is curiosity. This is shown in the story Cyclops where Odysseus decides he would rather meet the cyclops who's cave they found instead of stealing from him. This shows how curios he is because instead of taking the cyclops' things he would like to meet and talk to him. This makes him different from the hikers in the Spot article who said, "without the beacon, they would not have attempted the hike," whereas Odysseus knowingly risks his life with no safety net just for the sake of his curiosity.
ReplyDeleteThe statement "Odysseus knowingly risks his life" is the perfect phrase to describe his attitude towards challenges. Although curiosity is what makes him an adventurer, it is also not always the smartest idea, as he did lose men while taking a risk with the Cyclops in the story. Even though this didn't affect him, as he wasn't killed, it affected his crew members whose lives were lost for the sake of his curiosity, which in that moment led him to make poor decisions as the leader.

ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the characteristics of a true adventurer, because he takes the chance to go the hard way around. For example, in the Cyclops cave, he and his men could have just taken the riches and food and left, but instead, Odysseus says to stay because he wants to see the master of the cave. When they got trapped inside the cave, Odysseus stayed calm and figures out how to get out of the situation. Another example is with Circe, even though Odysseus had the help of Hermes, Odysseus does the action and he is not afraid to show them who's boss. The article states "They were just doing what adventurers have always had to do-relying on their own skill, and a little bit of luck, to push through adversity and come home alive," (Homer, 2). A true adventurer can take any situation from bad to good in a matter of minutes, if they stay calm and work things out by themselves or with a group. Relying on themselves or a group of people that one trusts will bring success to any situation. Odysseus can do this and that is what makes him a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he has intelligence and knows what he's doing. He was able to use his intelligence to out smart the Cyclops to escape. However, at some times his skills served as a disadvantage, rather than something he could use as an advantage. When he was taunting the Cyclops, the Cyclops was not pleased with what he had to say, causing him to get even more mad. But overall, Odysseus shows all of the qualities of a true adventurer.

ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he did not have to technology we have today to get out of trouble. He had the knowledge to get out of his obstacles without having to rely on someone else to come save him. When he encountered the Cyclops he had to come up with ways to out smart him rather than having his crew from the ship come help him. Even though Odysseus is a little too confident in himself and gets him and his crew in more trouble than they are already in. Like, for example, when he wanted to stay to see the Cyclops when they raided his cave he believed in himself too much and almost got himself killed just how people are putting too much of their faith into the GPS safety beacon. Even though he has that flaw, Odysseus is overall a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because he didn't have anything to get out of trouble but his knowledge. Unlike today when people are putting too much faith into the beacon and so people are slowly becoming a little less adventurous over time. Making Odysseus a true adventurer.
DeleteI agree with Kailynn because since Odysseus didn't have the tools and technology we have today it made him have to use his own intellect and made him have to trust in himself and his men, making him more of a true adventurer.
DeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventure because without knowing where he's going and what challenges coming for him to face. His actions and way of thinking helps the whole crew as a whole work together to figure out how to get out of bad situations. One example is in the episode The Cyclops, he thinks ahead when his interest and curiosity gets the best of him. Shown when The Cyclops asks for his name and he says "Nobody" preparing for when people ask The Cyclops who hurt him he would say "Nobody hurt me". Thinking fast in situations like that is a good trait to have as an adventurer. Now a days with options like the Spot more people are trying “dangerous” things, "Dangers become less intimidating when safety nets are available". For Odysseus he never had a safety net no matter what it was, him and his crew had to do it while these days adventures get less scary with easy access to immediate help.

ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he takes on the challenges presented to him. For example, in the story, "The Cyclops," Odysseus and his men get trapped in Polyphemus's cave in which Polyphemus feasts on many of Odysseus's crew members. As Odysseus loses more and more of his men, he could give up and allow it to continue. Instead, he takes the obstacle head on and comes up with a clever plan. Ultimately, his plan worked, and they were able to escape. This kind of quick thinking and persevering attitude shows off the adventurer side of Odysseus. Unlike society today, he did not have a satellite messenger unit to call up and help him out of the cave. The messenger unit makes it so that contacting help is just a click away, and nothing is a true adventure. It is clearly stated in the article when Jill Homer says, "Dangers become less intimidating when safety nets are available" (par. 11). The messenger units are taking the excitement out of true adventures, such as those that Odysseus embarked on. This shows that people today don't take the same adventures as Odysseus, but rather they rely more on technology to help them through difficult challenges that go their way.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he overcomes obstacles that are presented to him. For example, in the story "The Cyclops," Odysseus and his men find a giant cave and decide to go in, they notice that no one is in there besides them and there is a bunch of food they can take and leave with but Odysseus decided to stay and see what awaits for him. Polyphemus the owner of the cave walks in and starts doing his daily chores when he notices intruders. Now Odysseus is in trouble but it is nothing that he can't overcome. During this obstacle, a few of his men die but he is able to escape with the remains of his crew by out smarting Polyphemus. Nowadays something like this would never happen because of this safety beacon that communicates three messages that all signal for help. Odysseus didn't use anything like that so therefor he is a true adventurer.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good example for oddssues being a true adventurer

ReplyDeleteHere's the question: In what ways do you feel that Odysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer? Use evidence from the article as support. Odysseus is a true adventure because he risk his live for his crew and himself and to get back home to his family. In the land of the dead, he was very tired and giving up but he found his mom. She said his wife was waiting for him at home. This motivated him to go home.
I agree with you about how Odysseus risked his lives in order to save his crew and him in order to get back home safely.
DeleteJacob: You don't have to copy and paste the question in your response -- just respond. Also with regard to your comment on Roger's original post:
DeleteYour comment to another student shouldn't repeat someone else's comment, but rather extend the thinking beyond what was already posted. Don't simply write, "I agree with so and so."
Odysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because he defeats his obstacles. For example, in the Odyssey part 1, the Lotus Eaters, Odysseus's crew forgot about the longing to see their home after eating the Lotus Flower. Odysseus realized what was happening and forced his men back onto the ship and tied the ones who wanted to stay on the island. He also overcame the crisis of the Cyclops. He and a few men on his crew couldn't escape the Cyclops's cave because of the big boulder blocking the exit. He went threw many steps in order to escape including getting him drunk on wine, stabbing his eye, and hiding under the Cyclops's rams. Those are only two examples of Odysseus overcoming his obstacles.
ReplyDeleteOdysseus embodies the qualities of a true adventurer because when he is faced with challenges he relies on his wittiness rather than his brawns. In part one of the Odyssey when Odysseus is face to face with a man-eating cyclops, he knows he won't be able to fight his way out of the cave with the cyclops in it. Knowing this Odysseus thinks several steps ahead, like when he brought strong wine with him and had the cyclops drink it and when he told the cyclops his name is Nohbdy. By outsmarting the cyclops, Odysseus was able to get out of the cave and continue on his way home to Ithaca
